In some African tribes’ different styles of braiding signified a person social status within the community. The more important a person social status, the more elaborate his or her braided style appeared. The rival of culture hairstyles in the 1960s and 1970s resulted in banning of wearing braids, in many professions and even high schools. Which in turn lead to lawsuits.

However, suppression was followed by acceptance and mainstream adaption. Of course, today braids are as acceptable as any other hairstyle in most modern workplaces. In addition, braiding creates an opportunity to socialize and create relationships. Braided styles can require an enormous investment in time, some styles may take an entire day to complete. Braiding salons practice the art form of natural hairstyling. Which uses no chemicals or dyes. And does not alter the natural curl or coil pattern of the hair. However, stylist who holds only braiding, natural styling or locktician licenses cannot perform chemical services.

Maintaining Braids

First, caring for your hair and scalp while wearing braids depends on your scalp and hair condition. Also, maintain moisture on the scalp and hair. Moisturizing products are for daily use. Of course, no heavy products added to extensions. Furthermore, prepping hair properly prior to installation of extensions is essential. Also, dreadlock caps are an option to add to nightly sleeping routine. Additionally, salon treatments are beneficial to scalp care. As well as maintenance of braid installation and braid removal. Certainly, stick with educated braiders. Tension amongst other things have to be taken into consideration.

Other Considerations

Aside from identifying social status braided styles today are used as a fashion look, during hair growth process (TWA stage) and as a low maintenance style. The hair has to be long enough to be gripped and braided. With maintenance every 2-3 weeks.

Wave Pattern – refers to the shape of the hair strand

  • Straight
  • Wavy
  • Curly
  • Extremley Curly

Extremely curly hair grows in long twisted spirals. Showing varying diameters along a single strand. Some extremely curly hair naturally forms a coil. Often has low elasticity, breaks easily and has a tendency to knot.

Porosity – the ability of the hair to absorb moisture. Humectants attract and retain moisture.

Elasticity – the ability of the hair to stretch and return to its original length without breaking. Indication of the hair strength. Testing the porosity and elasticity of the hair is very important when determining the strength of the hair and density.

Condition

  • Damage and breakage from previous braids or chemical services
  • Hairline traction alopecia
  • Healthy scalp properly maintained.

Foundational braiding styles techniques are the basis for more advanced and trendy techniques. Your creativity along with additional training and practice will allow you to create beautiful styles. Properly cared for braided styles can last up to 3 months with 6-8 weeks being preferable.
